GAO Lijuan, ZHAO Yuwei. Dept. of Urologic Surgery, Dalian Children¡¯s Hospital, Dalian, China

Objective: To analyze the cause, diagnosis and treatment of testis torsion and testicular appendage torsion.
Methods: 12 cases with such disease had been treated during 1998-1999 in my hospital. All of them denied the history of sudden attack or strenuous exercises. Clinical findings consist of lower abdominal and scrotal pain and scrotal swelling of sudden onset. The testis is swollen, tender and retracted.11 cases were confirmed by operation. We managed to conserve the testis. The testis was repositioned and fixed. The appendages were resected. Antibiotics were given postoperatively. The patients recovered in about 1 week.
Conclusions: Torsion of testis and testicular appendage has a close relationship with congenital abnormality. It should be differentiated from the orchitis, epididymistis. It¡¯s suggested that early exploration would be beneficial to the resolution of inflammation and the restoration of testicular function. Orchiectomy is seldom undergone. There is no shrinking testis in 10 cases follow-up.
