Objective: To investigate the dynamic change principle of hyperlipidemia in children with steroid sensitive nephrotic syndrome (SSNS) and the effect of treatment with Duo Xi Kang capsule (DXK).

Method: Twenty SSNS children were randomly divided into DXK-treated group and disease control group, other 20 healthy children as the normal control group. DXK was administered in DXK-treated group and same regular steroid therapeutic measures were conducted in two groups of SSNS. Then the main four kinds of blood-lipoides components were determined, such as total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) before treatment and at 2nd to 3rd week, 5th to 6th week, 8th to 10th week after treatment.

Results: Before treatment the levels of TC, TG, HDL-C, LDL-C were significantly higher in SSNS children than those in normal children (p<0.001, <0.001, <0.05, <0.001, respectively). The level of LDL-C in DXK-treated group was normal and markedly lower than that in disease control group after the time of 2nd to 3rd week (p<0.05, <0.01, <0.01, respectively), and at the same time the levels of TC,TG gradually decreased. In disease control group, though the levels of TC, TG, LDL-C could decrease naturally after the time of 5th to 6th week, they were higher than those in normal children at the end of the observation.

Conclusion: The results showed that DXK shortened the lasting time of severe hyperlipoidemia, especially to LDL-C. Therefore it appears that DXK may reduce the secondary renal injury. But the levels of TC, TG in SSNS was still higher than those in normal children even in the 8th to 10th week.
