Objective: To meet the challenge of medicine in the 21th century, the clinical and communication skills of medical students should be improved. The courses of Primary Child Care in community were developed by the Department of Primary Child Care.

Methods: 33 medical students of second year in the University were selected to follow-up and record the processes of the growth and development in the children

from birth to 2-3 years of age in the community. By the forth year of the University they analysed and discussed the data in the group. Another 68 medical studentswere taken the traditional way to learn the knowledge of the Primary Child Care as a control group.

Results: There were no significant differences of the scores of the examination between tow groups, which demonstrated that the medical students can learn the knowledge of growth and development by self-teaching.

Conclusion: The new teaching method is the community-oriented, problem-based tracks, and is self-teaching for the medical students in practice. The courses of Primary Child Care in the community health can be extended in the future.
