Text Box: NEONATAL MORTALITY AND MORBIDITY IN V. MACARENA HOSPITAL IN 1999

Objective: To Study neonatal mortality and morbidity in our Center and unit.
Methods: All newborns delivered in our Hospital weighting more than 500g, from January to December, 1999. Clinical charts have been collected. Newborns admitted to neonatal unit have also been studied including, deceases and causes.
Results: From 3870 deliveries, 1.4% were gemelar. Total newborns 3925, 51.8% males, 0.84% fetal deaths. Of all live newborns, 4,9% pre-term, 5.6% post-term and 89.6% term. From total fetal deaths, 57.6% pre-terms (52% low weighted), 42.5%. No posterm fetal deaths. 468 admittances in neonatal unit (12% from all live newborns). 41.6% term normal weight. From all term newborn, were admitted 8.7%, 76% of pre-term newborns and 9% of pos-term. 22 died, 4.7% of admitted and 0.56% of all live-born; 63,6% males. 59% of deaths were preterm (8,9% of admitted preterms), 36,3% terms (2,6% of admitted terms), and 4,7% posterms (10.5% of admitted posterms). 54.5% of deaths were in the early neonatal period (50% in the first 24 hours), 27,.2% during late neonatal period and 18.3% during postnatal period. 50% of deceases were due to hyaline membrane disease associated to prematurity complications, 6 cases were chromosomopaties or polimarformations syndromes. 3 cases, meconium aspiration syndrome and 2 metabolic .
Conclusions: Fetal deaths were more suitable in low weighted pre-terms. Most of the newborns admitted to the neonatal unit were term with normal weight, but regarding a proportion between number of newborns, preterms infants were admitted in higger rate. Most of died newborns were pre-terms, but in rates, post-terms babies had the highest mortality. Deaths were higher during early neonatal period, mainly in the first 24 hours. Hyaline membrane disease was the main cause of death associated to complications of prematurity, followed by malformations and chromosomopaties.
