Clinical practice of Pediatric Nursing provides an opportunity for integrating theory with practice for nurse students. With the purpose of improving quality of pediatric nursing practice, we developed a new model of clinical practice with the innovation of both clinical arrangement and clinical lecture, which was in accordance with the requirement of holistic care. The method includes: (1) creating a better practice environment to ensure students to apply their knowledge to practice. Apart from 4 weeks of practice in pediatric ward with close interaction with patients, other forms of practice such as visit, observation, and educational ward around were arranged so as to open their vision in the field of pediatric nursing; (2) Case analysis approach was applied to create mutual participating. Each student participated in group case discussion actively, then one group member was selected by the group to present their results, other group members can add their opinion after presentation. Critical thinking and creative thinking were integrated, thus this approach motivated students to study positively and actively.
In order to evaluation the result of new practice approach, 83 students were interviewed after their practice in Children’s Hospital. Most students (93%) agreed that this new approach offered them an opportunity of problem solving and creative thinking. Eighty-one percent (81%) students recognized that they had more chance to participate, thus their interpersonal communication ability was improved. Annual educational evaluation on quality of clinical nursing practice from Shanghai Health Bureau also indicated that pediatric nursing practice was obviously satisfied.
Conclusion: The innovation of clinical pediatric nursing practice with the re-arrangement of visiting, observation, and educational ward around could broaden students’ profession vision, enhance their understanding of knowledge cognitivity.
