Ongoing Project: The Children’s Hospital at Huddinge University Hospital is a highly specialised hospital for children between the ages of 0 – 18. It has 350 employees and specialises in general paediatrics, neonatal care and organ transplantation.
Good paediatric care demands that the treatment and measures administered by the staff take into account the individual needs of the child, the stage of development and the state of ill health. All employees must participate in the preparation and integration of written targets for nursing care and their attitude must conform to ethical principles.
This presupposes that all employees possess a sound theoretical knowledge of nursing and that they all interpret the concepts in the same way. Existing international models for nursing care are regarded as not being valid in relation to the care of children in Stockholm today. Over the last two years 20 study circles have been held at six meetings each year (led by colleagues). At these meetings 200 nurses have the opportunity to discuss values, ethical problems and attitudes. Theoretical material, films and problems have been distributed to all circles. The circle leaders get together between each circle meeting. Theoretical instructor is a nurse with a doctor’s degree. Pedagogic instructor is the care development manager at Children’s hospital.
Anticipated benefit: mutually established fundamental values amongst the staff throughout the whole of the Children’s Hospital. Improved communication between employees regarding administering care. Increased interest in research for nurses. Group manager development.
