Objective: This cross-sectional study was conducted to establish normal standards for thigh circumference (TC) and thigh-to-head ratio (THR) among Filipino term newborn infants. Using the THR, it aims to determine the prevalence of intrauterine fetal growth retardation (IUGR) based on the weight for age classification.
Methods: A total of 959 infants were included. With a non-stretchable measuring tape the TC was measured at the inguinocrural region with the thigh flexed at a 90-degree angle as described by Merlob and Sivan.
Results: The mean TC was 16.04cm; THR was 0.48. The cut-off value (-2SD) for growth retarded infants was a THR of <0.41. Among the study group, the prevalence of IUGR among SGA was 10% and among AGA was 1.4%.
Conclusion: The set standards can be used as one of the reference points in investigating intrauterine fetal growth especially in regions where fetal ultrasonography is not routinely available.
