Objective: Screening for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is performed in babies born with a gestational age of less than 34 weeks, at the 4th week of life. Problems such as gastric residuals, abdominal distention, vomiting and bradycardia may be faced during this examination. This study was done to determine the frequency of these problems.
Methods: For the eye examination, 1% phenylephrine and 1 % cyclopentolate were ased as mydriatics, 1 hour before the examination, 1 drop for each eye. Medical records of these babies were analyzed retrospectively.
Results: During the last 2 years, 155 premature babies were examined 278 times. Twelve patients developed abdominal distention and gastric residuals and feedings were stopped at least for 24 hours in these babies. Another 2 babies developed bradycardia.
Conclusion: Close monitoring and follow-up is required for babies undergoing eye examinations for ROP screening. Feeding intolerance should not be undermined.
