Objective: The aim of our study was to evaluate the anthropometric features of the newborns in our region and their relation with other parameters such as parity, sex, gestational age and maternal age.
Methods: 201 newborn were included in this study. The newborns’ birth weight, height, head and chest circumference and maternal data were recorded after birth.
Results: Of the 201 newborn 16 (7.9%) were small for gestational age (SGA), 157 (78.1%) appropriate for gestational age (AGA) and 28 (13.9%) large for gestational age (LGA). Statistically significant relation was found between maternal age, parity and birth weight, chest circumference. No relation was found between maternal age, parity and height, head circumference. Birth weight, height, head circumference were statistically related to gestational age whereas there was not any significant relation between gestational age and chest circumference. . The height, birth weight and head circumference measurements were found to be higher in male newborns which was statistically significant.
Conclusion:In evaluation and follow-up of newborns , the anthropometric measurements are valuable; but due to the regional and populational variations, regional anthropometric values should be determined for different populations for more accurate interpretation.
