文本框: QUALITY OF LIFE (QOL) AND PSYCHOLOGICAL INTERVENTION IN CHILDREN WITH GRAND MAL

Objective: To evaluate QOL in 89 children with grand mal (GM), and give psychological intervention for existing psychological disorder.
Methods: QOL was assessed by using "The Quality Of Life In Epilepsy Inventory" and the psychological intervention was conducted by way of combination of giving children with GM popular courses about epileptic knowledge with individual consultations.
Results: (1) QOL was low and psychological disorder was existed in approximately 2/3 children with GM, e.g. worrying about seizure attacks and side effects of antiepileptic drugs, lower life fulfillment, poor emotion, energy, cognitive function and social adjustment. QOL was influenced obviously by intelligence quotient, drug therapy and the age at measurement. (2) After intervention, the psychological disorder in lots of children with GM was remarkably improved, being reduced from 64%-2.1% before and to 21.3%-51.7% after intervention. The differences between them were very significant, p<0.01. However, the psychological disorder was not improved in those, whose seizure was not controlled yet during the intervention.
Conclusion: The psychological disorder was existed and the QOL was low in lots of children with GM. Comprehensive treatment, i.e antiepileptic drugs in combination with psychological intervention, could control seizure, and better QOL in epileptic children.
