Being nurses working in the Paediatric & Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (PNICU), we face both success & failure in our care. In successful cases, we share the joy with the parents and their pride of their child. In failed cases, what can we offer to the parents? The care does not end when the child died.
A Bereavement Support Group is established by nurses in PNICU since 1999. The group has about 12 nurses who have shared interests in bereavement support. The ultimate goal is to have a structured bereavement program in PNICU for all staff to follow and to maximize the support for bereaved parents.
The Activities of the Bereavement Support Group is focused in 2 aspects:
1. Staff development
*	A survey was carried out to identify the weaknesses and needs of nurses in providing bereavement support.
*	Training courses on bereavement support are arranged for nurses to attend.
*	Regular meetings of support group members
*	An emotional assessment and communication form was designed to facilitate all nurses in identifying parents emotions and feelings.
2. Parental support
*	A file is set up to store data of bereaved parents since 1997.
*	Sympathy cards & greeting cards are sent to parents during bereavement period and at Christmas time.
*	A survey both in the form of questionnaire and interview were conducted. It was to evaluate the parents’ feelings and obtain their opinions on bereavement support
