In
Senegal about 30% of under five years children are at variable extent
malnourished. So many programs have been set up by NGO and Health Minister
to struggle against this public Health problem with nutritional strategies
based mainly on food and micronutriment suplementation at home. University
Department of Pediatrics via Social Pediatric Institute has been elected to
clarify why 25 % of 6 to 36 months did not manifest benefit of this
supplementation.
We
conducted a prospective study for nutritional rehabilitation. The
population was divided into two groups of children 6 to 35 months severely
malnourished. First group had nutritional supply of local meals. Second
group had official protocol used in Ministry rehabilitation centers.
Evaluation was made to clarify determinants of bad recovery.
The
result of our study show that the principal determinants of bad recovery
were: Hard working mother (p=0.03); Young mother (p=0.02); Associated
pathologies as diarrhea, infection, anemia, intestinal paraites; Low birth
weight (p=0.001); Promiscuity, bad hygiene; Poor income, illeteracy of mother.
Social
environment and poverty must be taken in account as important conditions
for whole success of nutritional programs in children at risk.
