HIV INFECTION AND MOTHER
TO CHILD TRANSMISSION (MTCT) - A SOUTH

Objective: This paper will look at implications and
experiences learnt from a mother to child transmission intervention trial,
conducted at one of the peri-urban clinic in Durban, South Africa.
Method: During a Phase 1/11 intervention trial in a
breast-feeding population, 249 women attending antenatal care at a district
level hospital/clinic were screened for HIV 1&2, following voluntary
written informed consent. A
sample of women who were infected was enrolled.
Findings pertaining to
the following:

Culture and patriarchy;

Economic and social status of participants;
¡¤
Confidentiality and
¡¤
Infection in the
infant evaluated
Results: All findings pertaining to the relationship
between culture and patriarchy, confidentiality, economic and social status
of participants risk of infection through MTCT will be explored and
presented.
Conclusion: Finally the paper will highlight lessons
learnt in the study, conclusion drawn and implications thereof.
