We report the results of
a prevalence survey carried out in 1999 in 13 Greek hospitals.Neonatal
units of the hospitals were included.4/13 were university hospitals and the
rest were general district hospitals. Pediatric patients were comprises the
8.4% of the total admitted patients.45.6%of the pediatric patients were
girls and 54.4%were boys. Approximately 9% were immigrants. Mean age of the
patients was 4.368 years and median age 2 years. Diagnoses were classified
according to drg (Disease related group) system. The most common pediatric
diagnoses according to drg system were:387 28%,322 25%,422 24%, 74 22%, 388
19%,464 and 98 14%, 470 and 81 12%, 71 10%.Commonest diagnosis in age group
0-1 years was 388, in age group 1-4 years 422, in age group 5-9 years was
74 and in age group 10-14 years was 422.The vast majority of pediatric
patients as it was expected were admitted in general pediatric departments
(49.8%), 24% were admitted to neonatal units,5.1% to pediatric surgery
wards, 0.3% to maxillofacial wards , 1.2% to intensive care units. The
median length of stay was 7 days and the mean 14.3 days.5.1% of pediatric
patients were stayed for 1 day, 17% for 2 days , 7.2% for 3 days 8.4% for 4
days.10.8% of patients were admitted to have a surgical procedure done and
the 37.8% of them would undergo surgery at ears, nose, mouth or throat.2
deaths (0.6%) occurred. Applying drg system promotes reimbursing healthcare
structures for patients admissions and better distribution of financial
resources.
