Objective: To introduce a new designed artificial anal sphincter combined with a feedback unit and interpret its principle to maintain anal continence. Method: The new designed device is comprised of four components: 1) a control pump; 2) a balloon reservoir; 3) an inflatable cuff; 4) a feedback unit. The animal model of fecal incontinence in which the device was implanted was observed for evidence of fecal soiling while the device was active or inactive. And the complications of the animals were also noted.
Result: Two dogs died of cold and excessive bleeding after operation respectively. One animal could not maintain anal continence postoperatively because of the cuff leak. The complication contains infection, intestinal adhesion and blockage etc. The success rate of this device to maintain anal continence was 94.4%.
Conclusion: The new designed artificial anal sphincter can maintain anal continence in the fecal incontinent animal model.
