Objective: To explore the diagnosis and prognosis of VMC in children.

Methods: Long-term follow-up observation of 194 VMC children, in which 118 cases were diagnosis VMC and 76 cases were suspected as VMC in our department during 1980~1998, were carried out. The average age was 8.8 years old and the average follow-up time was 7.8 years. The items of observation included clinical symptom, sign, electrocardiogram, exercise test, Holtechest X-ray, echocardiogram , myocardium enzyme and so on.

Results: According to the  “Dignostic standard of children VMC in nine province / city”, 48 of 194 cases were dignosed cardioneurosis and β receptor anaphylactia syndrome and left ventricular false tendons and hyperventilatoin syndrome. There were 75 of 146 cases fully recover (51.4%) and 68 amelioration (46.6%) and 2 converted to dilated cardiomyopathy (1.37) and 1 died (0.7%).

Conclusions: There is a expandable tendency in the diagnosis of VMC. Myocardium enzyme result is influenced by many factors such as upper respiratory tract infection and intramuscular injection and hemolysis of the samples and drugs and heart failure and arrhythmia, etc. Therefore, the pure abnormalities of myocardium enzyme can’t be considered as VMC. The prognosis of VMC is related to the onset and development of the disease, and related to promptly treatment and bed rest.
