Children¡¯s Hospital of Fudan University, Shanghai, China

Objective: To explore the characteristics of in-hospital patients¡¯ psychology & behaviour, as well as the affecting factors.
Methods: 49 in-hospital patients aged between 4-14 were interviewed, using Achenbach Children Behaviour Instrument (CBCL) and Family Assessment Device Instrument (FAD). At the same time, in-depth interviews were conducted toward 13 patients¡¯ caregivers. The in-depth interview topics covered patient¡¯s hospital experience, emotion & behaviour change. Chi-square test & multiple factors Anova were used to analysis the data.
Results: Internal Consistency Reliability of this instrument was 0.94. Based on this instrument¡¯s screening criteria, 30.5% of the in-hospital patients scored higher than standard value. The behaviour of attack & violate were significantly affected by the factors of Congenital Heart Disease (CHD), Age Group & Gender. These 3 factors also significantly correlated with some test- items in the instrument. The CHD patients¡¯ family have more communication problem than other families.
Conclusions: Compared with healthy children, in-hospital patients show more behavioural problems. Male patients performed worse than female patients on the behaviour of violate & attack. Due to the development of cognisance, patients after 7 years old seemed to have more psychological & behaviour problems than the younger ones.
