Text Box: CONTINUING PAEDIATRIC EDUCATION PROGRAMME (CPEP) IN NORTH TANZANIA

Objective: Improvement of health care for children through continuing education, directed at clinical officers and nurses working in district hospitals.
Methods: Building a network of 22 out of 35 districts hospitals in an area of grossly 120,000 km2 with a population of 4.3 million.
Activities are: Visits to hospitals every one or two months, with a lecture, discussions and teaching ward rounds. The organization of a 2-days seminar every half year, covering the field of paediatrics and child health. There is provision of learning materials.
Results: The network performed well during the last five years. CPEP is integrated in districts and national health plans.
Main problems faced by health personel in the districts hospitals were identified. Management schedules of common paediatric disorders have been written, edited and distributed.
Conclusion: The paediatric care in Tanzania does not meet the health needs of the people. Health care for children in Tanzania is susceptible to improvement. A program of continuing education is a worthwhile investment to improve health services. Could such a program be fruitful to other regions and countries.
