COMMUNITY-BASED ACTION AGAINST CHILDHOOD TUBERCULOSIS:
A PRELIMINARY EXPERIENCE WITH DOTS

Objective:
This Pilot project attempted to determine what factors contributed to the
success of Directly Observed Treatment, Short Course (DOTS) in Filipino
Children with TB disease.
Methods: Data
was collected from two urban poor barangays situated in Mandaluyong and
Quezon City, Philippines.
Results:
Results showed that close partnership of parents, health workers and local
leaders served to enhance compliance with DOTS strategy.
Conclusion:
Implicit in our objectives is the intention to share the lessons from the
DOTS experience in implementation for possible replication on a wider
scale. The inclusion of childhood TB disase & DOTS strategy in the
national TB porgram is recommended.
