Objectives: We attempted to assess the possible ocular changes that might occur in pediatric patients suffering from chronic renal disorder.
Methods: The present study included 50 patients with nephrotic syndrome (NS) and 71 patients with chronic renal failure (CRF). Laboratory investigations were done according to the original disease status. Ocular examination included measurement of visual acuity, assessment of refraction, anterior & posterior segment examination, measurement of intraocular pressure (IOP) and fundoscopy.
Results: Cataract was found in 10% of patients with NS, in 12% of patients with CRF on hemodialysis treatment & in 4.7% of patients with CRF on conservative treatment. Conjunctival & limbal calcification was detected in 6% of patients with CRF on hemodialysis treatment. Glaucoma was detected in 4.7% of patients with CRF on conservative treatment. Recurrent infection was found in 12.5% of nephrotic patients on steroid treatment. Phlycten was found in 2.5% of these patients.
Conclusion: It could be concluded from our study that patients with chronic renal disease are at increased risk of ocular changes and periodic ocular evaluation of these patients is mandatory for early detection and early treatment before it might be irreversible.
