Objectives: We attempted to assess the serum level of insulin like growth factor-I (IGF-I) in pediatric patients with chronic renal failure (CRF).
Methods: The present study included 59 patients with CRF on maintenance HD (group A), 15 patients with CRF on conservative treatment (group B) and 25 healthy age and sex matched subjects for control (group C). IGF-I was measured using ELISA.
Results: Plasma IGF-I was significantly elevated in group A in comparison with group B & C as well as in group B in comparison with group C.
Conclusion: It could be concluded from our study that patients with CRF have higher levels of plasma IGF-I that correlates to the degree of renal impairement and the nutritional status that alter the serum protein pattern as a whole.
