Objective: To elucidate the acquisition process of nursing ability in pediatric nursing training in student nurses, their own targets of training and results of self-evaluation of attainment were analyzed.
Methods: In 2000, 73 students in the 3rd year of the Nursing Department of Kyoto University participated in this study with informed consent. They were asked about their targets and attainment during pediatric nursing training. The following items were investigated using a 5-point scale: 7 items in the nursing diagnosis area, 11 in the nursing intervention area, and 1 in global assessment.
Results: The score for the target was significantly higher than that for attainment in each item. To elucidate the thinking structure in the nursing process in student nurses, cluster analysis was performed. The structure of training targets was divided into 3 clusters: play, nursing knowledge, and nursing diagnosis and intervention. The structure of the self-evaluation of attainment consisted of 4 clusters: nursing knowledge, nursing diagnosis and planning, daily life care, and nursing skills.
Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that nursing training improves the thinking level in the nursing process in student nurses.
