THE STUDY OF 501 CASES OF CLEANING HOUSE HOLD PRODUCTS POISOING
IN CHILDREN Akbar Koushanfar, A. Pajaumand Loghman Medical Poisoning
Center, Beheshty University, Tehran, Iran A retrospective study
based on existing data obtained information the only poisoning children
hospital in Tehran. We found that annually 1998 were admitted 2986 as out
patient clinic accidental poisoning cases reported and 501 cases (16.7%)
cleaning house hold products bleaching (whitex) 348 cases (69.4%) soup
products 80 cases (15.9%) detergent cleaner 50 cases (10.1%) toilet
articles 22 cases (4.3%) and 12 percent corrosive acid and alkaline have
major symptoms. In 60-70 percent of
reports of unintentional exposure involving cleaning products children less
than five years old are the victims (4.84%) children involving poisoning by
house hold cleaning become symptomatic (vomiting-diarrhea) and after 4-6
hours out-patient treatment by vomiting or gastric lavage discharged 53.6
percent were male the majority of the cases (94.1%) occurred inside the
home principally in the kitchen and
bathroom. Interesting finding was the high incidence of exposure
that occurred while the product was in use beside the family and rarely
were in storage. We therefore conclude
that poisoning prophylaxis plays an important role of parents on the care
of children and education of physicians urgency poisoning center well
equipment in all part of the world and Iran is necessary.
