Kamaledin H. Paediatric
Endocrinology & Diabetes Dept., Tripoli Medical Center, Tripoli, Libya During the period of 24 months
(1994-1995), 436 infants of diabetic mothers were born at Alkhadra General
Hospital. 127 (29%) of the diabetic mothers were having gestational
diabetes, 211 (48.3%) were boys and 225 (51.7%) were girls. 374 were Term
babies, 60 babies were Preterm, and only 2 babies were post-mature. Mean birth weight was 3700
grams (range 1400-5040 grams), Mean blood sugar at zero time was 78.4mg/dl
(range 0-238 mg/dl). 373 (85.5%) were asymptmatic, 62 (14.3%) were
distressed, and only one baby was jittery. Mean hospital stay was 2.5 days
(range 12 hours-26 days). 76 babies (17.4%) have had hyperbilirubinaemia,
out of whom 27 were pre-term babies. 4 babies had congenital heart disease. In management, 200 (45.8%) were
kept on frequent oral feed only, 132 (30%) required additive, and 104
(24.2%) intravenous dextrose was needed to keep their blood glucose within
normal limits. Infants of diabetic mothers
represent respectable burden on neonatal services that so far have coped
quite reasonably, yet there still good room for improvement, both from the
obstetric and neonatal sides.
