PATTERN OF ADMISSION OF DIABETIC CHIL DREN OVER 12 MONTHS RERIOD

During the whole of 1999, 326 admissions caused by 244 diabetic children. Of those 110 children were newly diagnosed (51 were male, and 59 were females). Mean age was 8.7 years (rang 11 months-16 years), 20% of them were presented with DKA.

134 Children were already known cases of IDDM (80 Females, and 54 Males). Their mean age 12.2 years (range 2-23 years). Mean duration of diabetes was 5.5 years (range 4 months-18 years).

It was found that the precipitating factors for their DKA were either non-compliance with insulin or infection. The Mean hospital stay was 3 days.

All of IDDM children (newly diagnosed and already diagnosed) managed in the Paediatric Endocrinology & Diabetes department. Only 3 children needed ICU admission and there were no fatalities.
