GLYCOSATED HAEMOGLOBIN (HBA1C) LEVEL AT TIME OF DIAGNOSIS OF IDDM

81 newly diagnosed diabetic children (40 males, 41 females) were tested for HbAlc within 6 weeks from the onset of symptoms. Mean age at the diagnosis was 9 years (range 1-19 years). Duration of symptoms, family education and positive family history of DM in relation to HbAlc were studied.

There was positive correlation between HbAlc level and duration of symptoms,

Children from educated families and those with family history of DM were found to have low level of HbAlc at time of diagnosis.
