Like S. Djupri, Pitono Soeparto Department of Child Health Medical Faculty of Airlangga University-Dr. Soetomo Hospital Surabaya, Indonesia Background: Acute-onset diarrheal episodes are still a
common occurrence worlwide, Agents that could be proved to be save and
effective in reducing the duration of diarrhea would be avaluable
therapeutic resource in recent years, the use of probiotics for diarrhea in
children. Objective:
to determine the influence of probiotic
containing formula on recovery from acute diarrhea in children. Methods:
Sample of the study contains 100 children
6 to 24 months of age with acute-onset diarrhea were enrolled in randomized
clinical trial. The patients randomly received either follow-up formula
with or without Bifidobacteria (probiotic or control group) on demand and
all of them followed until they were discharged from hospital. Result: 50 children were enrolled in probiotic group
and 50 in control group. There were no differences at admission between the groups in
age, sex, previous duration of diarrhea weight-height percentile,
prevalence of fever, degree of dehydration and the etiology of diarrhea,
The etiology of diarrhea are 55% rotavirus, 36% E. Coli and other cause are
Klebsiella 3%, Shigella flexneri 2% and mixed infection
1%(E.coli-klebsiolla). Lactose and fat malabsorption occurred in 13% and
65% respectively. The mean [SD] duration of diarrhea after enrollment was
1.10[0.97] days in probiotic group versus 2.64[1.01]days in control group
(t=-7.779;df=98,p=0.000). The mean [SD] of hospital stay was 2.64[0.78]
days in probiotic group versus 4.04[1.11] days in control group (t=-7.327;df=98;p=0.000)
The improvement of diarrhea related to frequency and formed of stool were
also significantly better in probiotic group than in control group(p<0.05) Conclusions: Probiotic containing
formula is effective in shortening the course and improving the recovery of
acute diarrhea in children.
