Indonesia The economic crisis
since 1997 in Indonesia had given a big problem including in health care.
One of the problems is increased number of undernutrition newborns that is
indicated by small for gestational age (SGA). The objective of this study
is to observe the impact of the economic crisis on low-birth-weight
infants’ especially on SGA or prematurity. This is a retrospective study
and the subject are livebirth with low birth weight infants born at Hasan
Sadikin Hospital. Group I were born before the economic crisis
(October-December 1996) and Group II were born during the economic crisis
(October-December 1998). The data was taken from the medical records. There
were 83 infants in Group I: So (60%) were SGAs, 28 (55%) of which were with
symmetrical types, 25 (30%) premature, and 6 (22%) were premature with SGA.
Group II were 86 infants: 34 (39.5%) were SGAs, 19 (56%) of which were with
symmetrical types, 45 (52%) premature and 7 (16%) were premature with SGA.
There was a significant decrease in the number of SGA infants during the
economic crisis (p=0.007) with significant increase in the number of
premature infants (p=0.007). There was no significant difference in the
proportion of premature with SGA infants before and during the economic crisis
(p=0.384). We concluded that the economic crisis did not increase the
number of SGA infants but increase the number of premature infants, which
is a problem in child health care.
