Objective: Studying the effect of work on the pattern and duration of breast feeding (BF) among both working & non working university graduate mothers (UGM).

Methods: One thousand UGM(500 working mothers Wo. M. & 500 non-working mothers N. Wo. M) were randomly selected from Cairo between Feb.96 toFeb.97.All mothers roarcd at least one child.

Data were collected through self-answering questionnaire that was designed by the team. Computerized data analysis

Results: In the study 34.2% of Wo. M. had nursery at place of work, but this didn't show any statistically significant difference(S.S.D.)on the duration of BF. Most of Wo. M. worked in administration while the remaining employed in technical teaching & other jobs, There was no S.S.D. between the type of work and the pattern of BF.

Conclusion: Employment wasn't factor in decision of BF and didn't in itself mean that mothers could or could not breast feed.

Maternal work didn't affect the pattern duration of BF.
