Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh Cerebral palsy is a
common neurological disorder among children of Bangladesh. A study was done
among 300 children with Cerebral Palsy (CP) attending the Child Development
and Nurologyl Centre of BSMMU, Bangladesh. Children were in the age group
of 1 to 15 years with mean age observed as 2 years 7 months. Male to female
ratio was 1.8:1, Most common type of Cerebral Palsy was spastic type (80%).
Spastic diplegia was the commonest spastic group of CP (35.8%). Perinatal
Asphyxia was the commonest risk factor (46.7%). Other risk factors were
neonatal convulsion (28%) and neonatal jaundice (16.3%). Common associated
problems were mental retardation, epilepsy, speech delay, visual and
hearing impairment. All mild form of CP got complete improvement after
developmental therapy and management of the associated problems. Early recognition of
risk factors can reduce incidence of cerebral palsy and muutidisciplinary
approach can improve the quality of life of CP patients.
