Objective: To discuss the role of
laparoscopy in the diagnosis and management of nonpalpable testis.
Methods: From May 1998 to April
2001, 56 patients (left 19, right 23, bilateral 14) aging from 1-6 years
underwent laparoscopy for nonpalpable testis.
Results: The findings and
management included: 1. Absence of testis (26 cases, 46.5%), blind-ending
or hypoplastic spermatic vessels and vas deferens were observed; 2. Cord
structure entering the internal inguinal ring (13 cases, 23.2%). An
inguinal exploration was needed: 3. Intra-abdominal testis (17 cases,
30.3%), fowler-stephens orchidopexy or orchidopexy in one or two stages was
indicated.
Conclusion: Laparoscopy has proved
to be a reliable means confirming the diagnosis of impalpable testis. It
also can be adopted as the first step to a staged operation.
