SPECTRUM OF THE PATIENTS IN PICU:

ONE ¨CYEAR EXPERIENCE

Objective: to describe the spectrum of patients aged less than one year, who were admitted to PICU Adam Malik Hospital Medan, Indonesia, during July 2000 ¨C June 2001.

Methods: This retrospective study was based on hospital medical record review. Collected data included age (month), sex, diagnosis, day of admission, outcome, using mechanical ventilation, and blood gas analysis values.

Results: From 272 patients admitted to PICU during one year, 86 (31,6%) cases were infants less than 1 year of age, with equal sex distribution.  Most of them were 0-1 month of age. The diagnosis consisted of surgical cases and non-surgical cases. The number of surgical cases was higher than non-surgical cases. In the group of 0-1 month of age, severe neonatal asphyxia was the most cause of non-surgical cases (34,1%) frequently occurred, and in the group of 1-12 months the most non-surgical cases     (2 of 5) was bronchopneumonia with respiratory disturb. Among 52 surgical cases, 40 (76,9%) cases were between 1 and 12 month of age, and the digestive problem was the most indication. Seventy-eights (90,7%) of infants were admitted for less than 5 days. Twenty-five (86,2%) of non-surgical cases age less than 1 month were death, where the data of blood gas analysis showed metabolic acidosis and high pCO2. 

Conclusion: In Adam Malik Hospital, the surgical cases were still dominantly admitted in PICU for recovering. Only 34 non-surgical cases were found during one year. Most of non-surgical cases were in-group of   0-1 month of age.
