PROFILE OF THE MENTALLY RETARDED CHILDREN
IN INDIA - THE LAST DECADE

Introduction – IMRHC (Integrated Multipurpose Recreation &
Hobby Center) , Bangalore is a voluntary organization, dedicated to the cause
of improving the quality of life of the disabled in urban and rural India. It
aims to bring together experts, professionals, parents and public to share
their knowledge and experiences in various fields and utilize this information
to improve the life of the disabled.
Objective: To highlight
the activities of IMRHC and the programs conducted for the benefit of the
mentally disabled.
Methods: Programs to train Downs,
Autistic, Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Handicap, etc. included – infant stimulation,
pre-school training, portage and conductive education, intensive sensory
training & enrichment program, formal / non-formal education, behavior
modification, creative and performing arts.
Other services offered by IMRHC are specialist consultation and medical care,
counseling and guidance for the parents and children, research in mental
retardation, integration of the retarded with the normal, awareness programs
for parents & professionals, vide workshops and seminars, identification of
talent in the mentally handicapped, vocational training & rehabilitation
services, parent support groups and respite care.
Results Our activities
have helped these children towards personal growth & independence, acquire
vocational skills, develop exceptional talents and achieve high standards at
national & international level.
Conclusion:
By using
integrated multi-category training as a tool, IMRHC has enriched the knowledge
of training and rehabilitation of all types of disabled and made the lives of
the disabled a little more livable.
